Important Update: New Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Vaccine Program

From 1 July 2026, changes to Australia's pneumococcal vaccination program mean that some adults may be eligible for a newer pneumococcal vaccine (Capvaxive) to provide protection against more strains of bacteria that can cause pneumonia.

What does this mean for me?

If you are:

• Aged 65 years or older, or

• An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult, or

• Living with certain medical conditions that increase your risk of pneumococcal disease,

you may be eligible for the new pneumococcal vaccination.

Common Questions We Have Received

Can I have it at the same time as other vaccines?

Yes, in most cases, Capvaxive can be given at the same appointment as other vaccines, however this is best determined by your treating team. 

I've had a pneumonia vaccine before. Can I still get this one?

Possibly; eligibility depends on which pneumococcal vaccine you have previously received and when it was given.  Some individuals, even with having a past pneumococcal vaccine, may benefit from the newer vaccine.
